Division and Unit Overview

The Market Research and Marketing Team (MRM) is part of WWB's Programs and Technical Assistance Division. The MRM team is charged with providing market research and marketing strategy support to our network member institutions through the provision of technical assistance and lateral learning opportunities. The team is also charged with developing WWB's gender agenda, and thus plays a vital role in differentiating WWB from other players in the sector.

Position Summary

The Marketing Manager works with the MRM Director to develop and deliver technical assistance to WWB Network Member microfinance institutions in the area of marketing including designing marketing departments, key functions and staff profiles; designing marketing strategies (mainly financial product marketing strategies, brand development); development of performance metrics and tracking systems; conducting and analyzing marketing research. The Marketing Manager must be able to integrate a variety of personnel (either WWB staff or consultants as well as NM staff) into projects, work to fixed deadlines and budgets, as well as conceptualize and write position papers and Journal articles on key topics that position WWB as a leading knowledge center on marketing strategies that attract and retain low income women. The Marketing Manager spends approximately 40% - 60% of her/his time in the field providing services to Network Members.

Position Accountabilities

  • Lead delivery of marketing technical assistance to WWB network members:

    • Coordinate with MRM Director, Relationship Managers and Network Members (NM) to identify project needs and develop customized solutions.

    • Determine staff resourcing and scope of projects, develop work plan, oversee staff and external consultants, communicate with NM in partnership with Relationship Managers, and manage high quality delivery of projects.

    • Work with market researchers on MRM team to design and conduct market research as input into marketing strategy development including: research design, conducting interviews and focus groups, developing findings and working with the appropriate members of technical services team and the Relationship Manager to develop recommendations for the NM.

    • Design marketing strategies with network members including assessing marketing function's performance; defining strategic priorities; conducting competitor and client research; defining marketing objectives, strategies, tactics, measures; identifying and working with local agencies (branding and promotion work); checking in and monitoring performance.

    • Integrate and coach NM staff in all aspects of strategy design and implementation.

    • Manage relationship with NM, particularly in the absence of a Relationship Manager.

    • Work with respective Relationship Managers to ensure NM satisfaction with WWB's service and successful execution of the project.

    • Provide Development Team with input into the development of performance reports to the project funder.

  • Contribute to building the WWB's understanding of effective marketing strategies to reach the poor, particularly women:

    • Work with the MRM Director to establish comprehensive point-of-view/theory in the area and to improve WWB's framework for building marketing capability in network members.

    • Work with MRM Director to develop a consultant pool of marketing experts.

    • Build organization's knowledge about how marketing can be used to empower low- income clients as well as push products.

    • Work with Development team to develop proposals to fund additional marketing work.

    • Maintain mastery of current thinking and innovations in the area.

    • Work with the MRM Director to capture innovation and learning for dissemination to the broader microfinance sector.

  • Embody WWB values as an individual, and enact them in interactions with Network Members and other WWB staff members.

Critical Knowledge and Capabilities

Marketing Skills and Knowledge

  • Minimum of seven to ten years professional experience in marketing preferably in commercial banking or consumer packaged goods.

  • Strong instincts for low cost, effective marketing strategies that target the low income population.

  • Good understanding of marketing research including research design and analysis.

  • Excellent analytical skills.

Consulting Skills

  • Capacity to run project teams and to manage others, including external consultants, in the product delivery process.

  • Strong relationship management and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including the ability to convince audience of recommendation and make presentations in public arenas.

  • Capability to turn own knowledge into products and processes that others can replicate with guidance.

  • Self-initiative and resourcefulness in developing strategies, setting and achieving goals in a timely manner.

People and Project Management Skills

  • Project management experience.

  • Capacity to work effectively in teams and in diverse settings, ranging from non-profits to banks, and interacting with field staff as well as senior management.

  • Capacity to work cross-departmentally (e.g. with Relationship Managers) and coordinate with others to communicate key findings and implications of analysis.

  • Capacity to design and manage projects.

Education / Experience

  • Experience in marketing to low-income populations and social marketing a plus.

  • MBA or equivalent degree.

  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate teams of internal staff.

  • Demonstrated strong writing skills, preferably published.

  • Language Skills - Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
