Next, we will begin hosting periodic global conference calls based on the suggestion of members.  The goal is to update our chapters and friends of WAM on global initiatives and highlight best practices at our chapters.  Participants can also ask questions or raise suggestions.  Our first global conference call will be a webinar on February 16th at 9:00 EST (New York), 14:00 GMT (London), 19:30 IST (Mumbai).  In order to attend, please register at https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/343047526 You will receive dial-in and webinar instructions after registering for the event.

WAM International is also piloting webinar support for our chapters in the first quarter of 2012.  The aim is to provide a platform for enhanced communication among chapters and a forum for subject matter experts to share valuable information with our members.  The technology can be used to host a chapter meeting, create a virtual guest speaker event, or record a WAM member's presentation on a microfinance topic for distribution to members.  I hope the webinar tool will increase communication and highlight the knowledge of our fantastic women.  Please contact your chapter leaders if you are interested in hosting a session before March 31st.

As a reminder, WAM International has created an endowment for microfinance practitioner training scholarships.  In order to support the endowment with a donation, please visit http://www.waminternational.org/ and look for the "Donate" button on our homepage.

As always, I appreciate your feedback and suggestions. Please do not hesitate to contact me at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

SEEP Week 2011

A WAM happy hour during SEEP week has become an annual tradition, and this year was no exception. Along with hors d'oeuvres graciously provided by SEEP, guests at the November 2 reception were treated to short remarks by WAM president Michele Costello who explained WAM's mission and history, and introduced Astrid Cardona from Friendship Bridge (Guatemala), this year's recipient of the WAM scholarship to the SEEP Conference. Since 2010, WAM scholarships have made it possible for 11 women to attend trainings and networking events ranging from the SEEP Annual Conference, to Boulder-at-Turin, to AMIDA in Indonesia, to SMDP-Ghana, and the Women's World Banking Annual Capital Markets Conference. Pictured left to right are: scholarship recipient Astrid Cardona, WAM president Michele Costello, board member Anne Folan, and secretary Lauren Clark.

Message from WAM International President, Michele Costello

As we bring 2011 to a close, I want to thank our board members, chapter leaders and members for a wonderful year.

The scholarship pilot continued in 2011 with good success. Overall, since 2010, WAM scholarships have made it possible for 11 women to attend trainings and networking events ranging from the SEEP Annual Conference, to Boulder-at-Turin, to AMIDA in Indonesia, to SMDP-Ghana, and the Women's World Banking Annual Capital Markets Conference.

Our most recent scholarship recipient Astrid Cardona from Friendship Bridge (Guatemala) attended the SEEP Conference in November 2011.  She is pictured below (left to right) with myself and fellow board members Anne Folan and Lauren Clark. During the WAM Reception at the conference, Astrid addressed the audience and explained the important work her organization is doing to reach women in addition to expressing her gratitude for the scholarship opportunity. She also expects ongoing benefits from the networking and looks forward to sharing good knowledge from the conference with her colleagues.

The impact of the scholarship program is deeper than the numbers convey; our scholarship recipients become ambassadors who share acquired knowledge with other practitioners and demonstrate the WAM values in their home institutions and communities over years to come.

In order to maintain the program in a sustainable manner, we are creating an endowment for future scholarships to the above named trainings.

During this season of giving, please consider an alternative holiday gift in the form of a donation to the WAM Scholarship endowment by visiting http://www.wam-international.org/.

As always, I appreciate your feedback and suggestions. Please do not hesitate to contact me at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

I wish you and your loved ones all the joys of the season.

Kind regards,

WAM International Newsletter Fall 2011
WAM International Newsletter Spring 2011

Message from WAM International President, Michele Costello

As we transition to Fall, it is a good time to reconnect with WAM.

WAM Newsletter Spring 2011In my last newsletter, I updated you on local chapter initiatives such as industry networking events, film nights, keynote speaker dinners, and WAM gender working group support.

This month, I would like to highlight ways that collaboration is increasing the reach and impact of WAM globally.

Below are just a few examples:

  • WAM Sister Chapters: The sister chapter relationship is intended to formalize the normal networking and dialogue of WAM members in the form of regular contact between two chapters to share best practices, ideas, and to support chapter growth. One example is the newly formed WAM Canada and WAM Chicago sister relationship, where exchange of ideas on member outreach has begun. Another example is WAM DC and WAM Middle East relationship, where DC is sharing ideas to revitalize the Middle East chapter.

  • WAM Joint Sponsorship of Events: WAM chapters are leveraging their financial and people resources by jointly hosting events with other microfinance organizations. For example, WAM NY and the Microfinance Club of NY jointly hosted a "speed networking" event for industry professionals in September. Both organizations benefitted from the wider networking base, cross-advertizing of the organizations in marketing materials, and a shared financial burden for the event.

  • WAM Networking at Industry Events: WAM International and WAM DC will jointly host a happy hour after the SEEP Conference in Washington, DC this November. The event is not affiliated with the SEEP Conference, however allows an industry professional in attendance to participate in networking with WAM and non-WAM practitioners who have a focus on women. More details on this soon!

I also request your continued support for the WAM scholarship initiative, which aims to enhance outreach to and impact of women in microfinance by funding skills-based training for female practitioners. Please find a way to either support scholarship fundraising at your local chapter or contribute to the fundraising initiatives of other chapters, such as the upcoming WAM NY silent auction and wine tasting event (WAM NY Fundraiser Link).

As always, I appreciate your feedback and suggestions. Please do not hesitate to contact me at: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

WAM International Newsletter Spring 2011

Message from WAM International President, Michele Costello

Fellow members and friends of Women Advancing Microfinance,

WAM Newsletter Spring 20112011 will be an exciting year at WAM, where ideas and efforts over the past few years will culminate in stronger initiatives and outreach. I would like to thank outgoing WAM International President Anne Folan for her leadership in 2010, and I look forward to building on her initiatives in 2011. We also need your individual commitment to WAM in order to make this year a success. Please think about what you can contribute in terms of time, money and talent, and commit to this goal at either your local chapter or the WAM International level.

Our first board meeting of 2011 was held in Washington, DC on the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. It was a fitting occasion to reflect on the IWD theme of "...celebrating the economic, political, and social achievements of women, past, present and future..." as it relates to WAM's mission to "...support women working in microfinance and microenterprise development through education and training, by promoting leadership opportunities, and by increasing visibility of women's participation and talent while maintaining a work/life balance." The WAM scholarship pilot program and SEEP Gender Working Group activities described further below will allow us to address these themes over the coming year.

This year, we will aim to enhance chapter communication/collaboration, highlight women, increase fundraising, and elevate the profile of WAM in the microfinance community through our WAM scholarship agenda. In 2010, we piloted the scholarship program with WAM NY, WAM DC and WAM Ecuador. WAM International and the chapters jointly fundraised for conference entry fees and scholarship recipient travel costs. Winners were selected in collaborative fashion between WAM International, WAM local chapter representatives, and conference organizers. In total, WAM sponsored 7 female microfinance practitioners to attend 4 trainings (WWB, SEEP, SMDP Ghana, AMiDA) which developed the skills and networks of the selected high potential women in the industry. In 2011, we aim to send new high potential practitioners to the same conferences while expanding the pilot participation to new WAM chapters. If you or your chapter is interested in getting involved, please contact me. By 2012, we can formalize the scholarship program approach based on our collective WAM International and WAM chapter experiences and feedback from this two year pilot program.

WAM International is also playing a critical role on the newly formed SEEP Gender Working Group, where we can implement our core value of "raising gender with a collective voice." Our WAM International consultant, Jenn Thomson, is also professionally facilitating this group. WAM International is engaged in this group formally thanks to the efforts of our outgoing WAM International President, Anne Folan. I encourage each chapter to discuss and share gender issues and recommendations that WAM International can raise in the Gender Working Group.

Please contact me with your feedback on these issues or with any other questions you have at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . I will update you on developments around these initiatives over the coming months.

On a personal note, I was proud to wear my WAM badge at the CARE conference reception after our WAM International board meeting. It was a fantastic evening of networking and broad-based gender discussions, as well as an opportunity to share information about the great network we have in WAM. I ask that each of you also identify yourself as WAM members when you attend industry events or networking receptions. As a professional women's network, we are only as strong as our membership. I know we can grow our numbers and accomplish great things together this year!

All the best for a fantastic 2011!

Kind regards,
Michele Costello
President, WAM International
